Stop categorising your spending into twenty buckets

Precision you will not maintain is worse than a rough split you will.

A supermarket aisle

It is tempting to separate groceries from household from toiletries from snacks. Three weeks later you are hesitating at every entry, wondering which bucket the shampoo belongs in, and that hesitation is where tracking dies.

Start with five to seven categories that map to decisions you might actually change: housing, food, transport, bills, fun, savings, other. If a category has never once changed your behaviour, it does not need to exist.

Add subcategories later and only where a number surprised you. Detail should be earned by curiosity, not assumed up front.

Tarsi supports subcategories when you want them and ready-made templates when you would rather not think about it.
