The 50/30/20 rule, adjusted for Philippine salaries
Needs, wants, savings, and why the textbook split rarely survives a Manila rent cheque.
The rule says half your take-home goes to needs, 30% to wants and 20% to savings. It is a useful starting shape, not a law, and in Metro Manila rent alone can eat 35% to 40% of a starting salary.
Treat the three buckets as ratios to move toward rather than a pass/fail test. If needs are at 65%, the question is not “am I failing” but “which need is the one I can actually move this year”, usually housing or transport, rarely groceries.
The part worth keeping is the ordering: savings is a category you fund, not whatever survives the month. Set it aside the day your salary lands.
In Tarsi, make Needs, Wants and Savings top-level categories with your real subcategories underneath, then watch the split on the budget screen. Seeing 64/28/8 in your own numbers is more persuasive than any article.
